Thrombosis

Thrombosis is the formation of solid body from the elements of the circulating blood during life , either intravascular or intracardiac . The solid body is called thrombus . The process of thrombosis due to the deposition of platelets on the endothelial layer of the vessels wall and formation of a clot . Thus , a thrombus is compound of platelets (basically ) , fibrin , leucocytes , and erythrocytes in varyingb proporation .

Varieties of thrombosis ……………

  1. White thrombus or pale thrombus or platelet thrombus or coagulation thrombus – This is entirely formed by platelets and devoid of R.B.C and W.B.C . This is due to (i) when blood flow is rapid (ii) when the rate of clotting is slow . This type of thrombus may be found in rheumatic vegetation of heart .
  2. Red thrombus or Fibrinus thrombus or coagulation  thrombus – This type of thrombus is composed mainly in fibrin , R.B.C and W.B.C , though initially composed of platelets . The thrombus is soft and friable . This is due to  ( i) when blood is slowed down (ii) when the rate of clotting is rapid . Clotting inside the veins is the best example .
  3. Mixed thrombus – This is composed partly or platelets like pale and partly of fibrin mixed with R.B.C and W.B.C . The formation of this type of thrombus depends upon the blood flow and the rate of clotting . Majority of thrombi belong s to this variety and commonest form is anti-mortem thrombus .
  4. Erythrocyte coagulation thrombus – Due to adhesion or coagulation , this type of thrombus will be found .
  5. septic thrombus – when a thrombus contains pyrogenic organism usually , it will be called septic thrombus . This septic thrombus may enter into  the circulation producing septic emboli and pyaemic abscess  .
  6. Aseptic thrombus – This is a type of thrombus .
  7. Ball thrombus- This may be found in dialated auricle in mitral stenosis .
  8. Agonal thrombus – This will form rapidly , shortly before death . It is usually found in right heart failure and lobar pneumonia .
